Meet the Executive Team

We are delighted to officially introduce the new Executive team, who have joined Lisa Bee and Graham McDonald at Merchants’ Hall. Together, they bring a wealth of experience and fresh perspectives to our operations as the new CEO & Secretary and leaders in our Finance and Communications Departments, dedicating their expertise to supporting our members and the ongoing growth of the Royal Company of Merchants.

Guy Cartwright

CEO & Secretary

ABOUT GUY: Guy graduated from Aberdeen University in 1988 with an MA before being commissioned into the Royal Regiment of Fusiliers, going on to serve in many interesting parts of the world including the Arctic, Northern Ireland, Latvia, Bosnia, Central Europe, the US and the Falklands.

After a highly fulfilling career, Guy left the army in 2006 and trained as a Chartered Accountant with PwC in Edinburgh. He became Bursar and Clerk to the Court of Directors at the Edinburgh Academy upon qualifying as a CA, where he worked for 14 years overseeing major campus developments and school growth.  

Guy now volunteers as a trustee on the board of the Veterans Foundation, a grant-making body to support ex-service personnel across the country. His hobbies include open water swimming, fly fishing and shooting. He is married with two sons who are currently at university.

Jen McCartney

Finance Director

ABOUT JEN: Jen has more than thirty years of experience in finance and qualified as a Chartered Management Accountant in 2001. Her career spans multiple industries, including the NHS, engineering, retail and publishing. Before joining the Royal Company of Merchants, she served as the Head of Royalties at HarperCollins Publishers, where she focused on payments to European authors. She is passionate about numbers, financial controls and ensuring accurate and timely information for decision-making.   Outside of work, Jen enjoys spending time with her family and two Jack Russells, as well as crafting: particularly knitting, crocheting and quilt-making.

Rebecca Clark

Accountant

ABOUT REBECCA: Rebecca started out by studying to become a Sport Psychologist, obtaining a BSc (Hons) in Psychology and an MSc in Psychology of Sport, along with various other coaching and teaching qualifications. While teaching at the University of Stirling, she specialised in statistics and analysis before transitioning into a career in finance, during which she began studying accounting in 2023. Rebecca has accumulated a diverse range of experience in finance across the sports industry, as well as in private and public sector organisations. She joined the Royal Company of Merchants in September 2024.

Philly Nicholson

Events, Membership & Communications Director

ABOUT PHILLY: Philly brings extensive experience in the events and membership industry to her role as Membership, Events & Communications Director. She began her career working on a 25,000-acre estate, where she organised high-profile events in a baronial ballroom. When the bright lights of the city beckoned, Philly spent four years at the Signet Library, working for the Society of Writers to Her Majesty’s Signet, where she developed a flair for delivering exceptional experiences. Drawn by a creative calling, she later transitioned to the luxury event catering industry, where she has spearheaded and produced a range of unique events in Edinburgh for the past 16 years.

Megan Rough

Communications Executive

ABOUT MEGAN: Megan graduated with a First Class MA (Hons) in English and Modern History from the University of St. Andrews in 2020. Since then, she has been working in theatre and tourism, leading historical tours in Edinburgh’s Old Town and directing a sold out show at the Traverse Theatre in 2023. Her communications experience includes freelance writing for a New York-based careers magazine and serving as the Marketing Executive at The Real Mary King’s Close and then Continuum Attractions more widely.

Additionally, she has six years of experience tutoring English and History at National 5 and Higher levels. She is excited to bring her journalistic flair and passion for entertainment and visitor engagement to the Royal Company of Merchants.

Lisa Bee

Senior Company & Charities Administrator

ABOUT LISA: Lisa joined the Royal Company of Merchants in August 2023. Prior to this, she had several years of experience in corporate services and governance within a social housing organisation. Lisa has extensive experience in finance and office management, and she is currently pursuing a BA in Business Management at Robert Gordon University

Ann Murdoch

Almoner

ABOUT ANN: Ann graduated from Robert Gordon’s Aberdeen with a Certificate in Social Work and worked in various positions in Northern Ireland, Chester, Western Germany (as a SSAFA Social Worker), Wiltshire and finally Edinburgh, where she was employed as a Senior Social Worker managing the hospital team at the RIE. She retired early in 2016.  

During her social work career, she studied at Manchester University for the newly created Post Graduate Approved Social Worker (MHO in Scotland) qualification in Mental Health. In Edinburgh, she completed a Management and Supervision postgraduate course at Napier. Ann also represented Renal Social Work on the board of the British Renal Society, adjudicating and presenting at various annual conferences.  

After retiring, she worked as a part-time locum Duty Senior at Westerhailes and then Peebles before commencing her current position as the Royal Merchant Company Almoner in December 2019.

Graham McDonald

Senior Company Officer

ABOUT GRAHAM: Graham joined the company in 2014 after nearly a full career in the Army. Before leaving the military, he served as the Officers’ Mess manager and Company Quartermaster Sergeant, overseeing more than 140 soldiers and the battalion command element, as well as managing accommodations and supplies. Graham enjoys being part of a long-established and historical organisation like the Merchant Company, participating in civic processions, dinners and the day-to-day operations of the Hall.
